The Inaugural Miles for Melanoma of Georgia
5k Run/Walk was held at Augusta’s Lake
Olmstead Park on April 24, 2010. We had 168
registered participants for our inaugural event
in addition to the many attendees who simply
showed up to spend an April morning with
friends for a good cause. Unfortunately, we
were unable to complete the event before a very
typical Augusta springtime shower arrived.
However, the rain did nothing to dampen the
spirits of those in attendance. We were blessed
to have among our participants
FIVE melanoma
survivors: Susan Hancock, Jason James, Sarah Tew and two others, as well as the family and friends of Carl Troedsson who lost his battle with melanoma on February 23, 2010 at the age of 41. The family and friends of Joseph M. Doyle, a Wisconsin transplant to Atlanta, who lost his battle with melanoma on January 25, 2010 at age 35, were significant contributors to our inaugural event. Although they were unable to physically attend, their presence was undeniable in spirit. All participants received t-shirts and refreshments donated by our very generous sponsors. Our very gracious master of ceremonies, Dill Gooding, did an admirable job of keeping the festivities moving along in the face of considerable precipitation. Colleen McBride, our event photographer, did a wonderful job of capturing the event for posterity (her handiwork can be viewed here).  Through the efforts and generosity of our sponsors, participants and volunteers Miles for Melanoma of Georgia donated over
$7,800 to the Melanoma Research Foundation. We are very proud of our inaugural event and look forward to growing this endeavor annually until this devastating disease is eradicated .
